THE 89th ILLINOIS VOLUNTEER INFANTRY REGIMENT

The 89th Illinois Infantry Regiment, also known as the Railroad Regiment, was formed in July and August 1862. It participated in the battles of Stones River, Liberty Gap, Chickamauga, Orchard Knob and Missionary Ridge, Pickett's Mill, the Atlanta Campaign, and Nashville. The regiment was mustered out in June 1865.

I--- GENERAL RESOURCES

     1. Dornbusch, C.E. MILITARY BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE CIVIL WAR
                           (1961-72),   4 volumes.      

        Volume 1 covers the northern states. It is divided by state, and lists information sources 
        about various Civil War regiments raised by that state (includes regimental muster and 
        discharge dates).
        Volume 2 covers the southern states, border states, and territories, and provides the same 
        sort of information as does Volume 1.
        Volume 3 is a guide to miscellaneous Civil War information on a wide variety of subjects.
        Volume 4 includes regimental publications and addenda.

     2. Dyer, Frederick H. A COMPENDIUM OF THE WAR OF THE REBELLION 
                           (1959), 3 volumes.       

        Volume 1 is composed of numerous helpful lists,including a regimental index (Union).
        Volume 2 includes an alphabetical list of Battles,Campaigns, & Skirmishes, plus 
        chronological lists by state of Battles, Campaigns, etc.
        Volume 3 is series of regimental histories (divided by state) of Union regiments.

     3. Hewett, Janet B. SUPPLEMENT TO THE OFFICIAL RECORDS OF THE UNION 
             AND CONFEDERATE ARMIES (1994-), multivolume. 

        A continuation and companion to THE WAR OF THE REBELLION book set (OR). 
        Some of the volumes are labeled "Reports," and reprint official reports of military 
        commanders which were left out of the OR. Other volumes are labeled "Record of 
        Events," and provide detailed (10-50 page) histories & chronologies of Union & 
        Confederate regiments. No rosters.

     4. Neagle, James C. CONFEDERATE RESEARCH SOURCES (1986).
                    
        A guide (by state) to federal and local Confederate information sources. State 
        listings include lists of Confederate regiments from that state (just lists, not 
        regimental histories).

     5. Neagle, James C. U.S. MILITARY RECORDS: A GUIDE TO FEDERAL AND 
             STATE SOURCES, COLONIAL AMERICA TO THE PRESENT (1994).                

        Very thorough, well-organized guide to federal & state repositories of military 
        records. Covers records from colonial days to Vietnam War. Especially helpful 
        for its enumeration of records available & policies of various state archives. 
        Includes list of manuscripts available & a guide to published sources of 
        information on state's veterans.

     6. THE UNION ARMY: A HISTORY OF MILITARY AFFAIRS IN THE
             LOYAL STATES (1908), 8 volumes.   

        The first four volumes are histories (by state) of regiments from the loyal 
        states; volumes 5 & 6 are an alphabetical list of battles and skirmishes (which 
        in some cases include a fairly extensive account of the action in question); 
        volume 7 has information about the Union Navy; and volume 8 has short but 
        useful biographical sketches of Union generals (organized alphabetically).

     7. U.S. War Dept. THE WAR OF THE REBELLION: A COMPILATION 
             OF OFFICIAL RECORDS OF THE UNION AND CONFEDERATE 
             ARMIES (1880-1901), 70 volumes bound in 128.
 
        The official record of the war gathered together shortly after the war by the 
        War Dept. The last volume is an index to the set. This set is best for finding 
        information about regiments, officers, and and those enlisted men who did 
        something heroic. 
     
     8. Welcher, Frank J. THE UNION ARMY, 1861-1865: ORGANIZATION 
             AND OPERATIONS (1989-), 2 volumes.           

        A listing of regiments, North & South, which participated in major battles 
        and campaigns of the war. Volume 1 covers Eastern Theatre, volume 2 the 
        Western Theatre. Good for finding who the regiment served under and the 
        regiments in the division & brigade it was teamed with.

II--ROSTERS & ADJUTANT GENERAL REPORTS
 
            Illinois

     9.  Illinois. Adjutant-General's Office. REPORT OF 
           THE ADJUTANT-GENERAL OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS 
           (1900-1902), 9 volumes.        

         Rosters by regiment of Illinois civil war military organizations. Listings 
         include officers, NCOs, and enlisted men. Listings by regiment and company 
         include name, rank, place of residence, date of enlistment & date of rank, 
         date of muster, and remarks. Remarks can include information about 
         promotions, resignations, discharges, wounds received or deaths in battle. 
         Volume 9 of the set covers the Black Hawk War, War of 1812, the Mexican-
         American War, and the Spanish-American War.  These listings are similiar 
         to the ones for Civil War soldiers.

    10.  United States. National Archives. INDEX TO COMPILED
             SERVICE RECORDS OF VOLUNTEER UNION SOLDIERS WHO 
             SERVED IN ORGANIZATIONS FROM THE STATE OF ILLINOIS,
             101 reels.                    
         
         Index only, but can be used with Adjutant General book set above.

     11. United States. Adjutant-General's Office. REGISTERS  
             OF ENLISTMENTS IN THE U.S. ARMY, 1798-1897 (1956).

         A register of enlistments in the United States Army (not a register of 
         enlistment in state military organizations).
  
     12. United States. National Archives. INDEX TO COMPILED
              SERVICE RECORDS OF VOLUNTEER UNION SOLDIERS 
              WHO SERVED WITH THE U.S. COLORED TROOPS 
              (101 reels).               

         Index to the National Archives records of men who served in the 
         United States Colored Troops.

III-- PENSION LISTS & ROSTERS OF EX-SOLDIERS & SAILORS
 
            Iowa

    13. Iowa. Adjutant-General's Office. LIST OF EX-SOLDIERS,
             SAILORS,& MARINES LIVING IN IOWA (1886).   

        Organized by state and then by regiment veteran served from 
        (regimental listings are alphabetical). Listings provide name, 
        rank, company, and present city or town. There are also listings 
        for surviving veterans of the War of 1812, Mexican-American War, 
        and the Black Hawk War. There is an index to regiments listed. 
        Includes numerous men who served in Illinois regiments.
            
           Nebraska

    14. Nebraska. Secretary of State. ROSTER OF SOLDIERS, SAILORS,
             & MARINES OF THE WAR OF 1812, MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR,
             AND THE WAR OF THE REBELLION RESIDING IN NEBRASKA                  
             JUNE 1, 1891 (1892).       

        Organized by state from which veteran served, then alphabetically 
        by surname. Listings give name, rank,regiment, and county of 
        residence. (We have similiar rosters for 1893, 1895, and 1897).  
        Includes numerous men who served in Illinois regiments.

    15. MEDICAL & SURGICAL HISTORY OF THE CIVIL WAR (1990-), 
             12 volumes.                 
 
       Various case histories & statistics of medical & surgical cases treated 
       by Union & Confederate doctors & surgeons (a majority are Union cases). 
       Some case histories include fairly graphic illustrations, so this set 
       is not for the squeamish.

    16. United States. Pension Bureau. LIST OF PENSIONERS ON THE 
            ROLL JANUARY 1, 1883 (1883), 5 vols.   

        List by state and county of pensioners receiving disability payments 
        as of 1-1-1883. Lists include name, city or town, nature of disability, 
        monthly payment, and date of original allowance. Missouri listings are 
        in volume 5, Illinois listings are in volume 3.

        index.

    22. Powell, William H. OFFICERS OF THE ARMY AND NAVY
             (VOLUNTEER) WHO SERVED IN THE CIVIL WAR (1893).

         Similar to Powell's regular army book (see above), but for men 
         serving with military organizations raised by the states.
